ORPHEUS - G.R.S. Mead (John M. Watkins, London, 1965)

Hardback with dust-jacket. 208 pages. Blue cloth boards.

A comprehensive study of Orpheus and the Orphic tradition -- the mystical importance of which is not generally understood. As Proclus writes: "All the theology of the Greeks comes from the Orphic mystagogy", what is to say, initiation into the mysteries.

This study begins with Orphic origins, including Homer and Hesiod, Pythagoreans and Neoplatonists. Orphic works are considered and Orphic theology and theogony are outlined. The Orphic cosmogony and pantheon are examined alongside Orphic mysteries and symbolism. Finally Mead considers Orphic discipline and psychology and the doctrine of rebirth.

Condtion: Very good. Excellent dust-jacket with a hint of edge-wear, now in protective mylar cover. Book itself is excellent -- light wear to board edges and a hint of foxing to page edges, otherwise clean and unmarked.
